An 18-year-old man has died after crashing his car into a tree as a police car with flashing lights was driving in the opposite direction, police said.

An 18-year-old man has died after crashing his car into a tree as a police car with flashing lights was driving in the opposite direction, police said.

The officer in the police car witnessed the collision as they were travelling

to a separate incident.

The man was driving his silver Renault Clio in the direction of Putnoe, Bedford, in the early hours of Sunday morning and the police car was driving towards the town centre.

The officer stopped after witnessing the accident, ran to the car and pulled the driver from it moments before it burst into flames, Bedfordshire Police said.

Despite giving first aid to the driver, the officer was unable to save him and the young man was pronounced dead at Bedford Hospital shortly afterwards.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is overseeing an investigation into the man's death because of the contact the police had with the man before he died, a police spokeswoman said.

The driver of the Renault Clio has not yet been formally identified.
