One of India's top business magnates, Prabhu Shankar Agarwal, has been sentenced to life in prison for attempted murder, in Calcutta.

The confectionery chain owner paid mafia member Gopal Tewari and three others to kill the owner of a tea stall blocking construction of a food plaza.

But after drunkenly confusing the two, the gangsters, also convicted, shot and seriously injured his nephew instead.

The chain, Haldiram Bhujiawala, is worth about 5bn rupees ($100m; £60m).

Agarwal had persuaded other tenants to vacate the premises around the proposed plaza in Calcutta's central business district of Burrabazar.

But having run it for 50 years, Satyanarayan Sharma refused to vacate the small stall blocking the entrance.

Agarwal had been opening his first overseas food plaza London on 30 March 2005, when Mr Sharma's nephew, Pramod, was shot.

He was arrested at Delhi airport two months later.
